Who is Ngo Thoi Nhiem

Ngo Thoi Nhiem (also known as Ngo Thi Nham, 1746-1803) was a famous scholar and writer of the Le – Tay Son dynasties, who had great merits in helping the Tay Son dynasty repel the Thanh army. Ngo Thoi Nhiem came from a noble family in Bac Ha province.

In his career, Ngo Thoi Nhiem was smart, studied well, and had some history projects from early. He passed the first exam in 1768 and then pass the doctorate in 1775. After passing the exam, he was appointed as an official in the Ministry of Households under the Le – Trinh dynasties and was highly respected by Trinh Sam King. In 1778, he became the Chief of Kinh Bac and Thai Nguyen. At that time, his father was the governor of Lang Son. He and his father are famous for literature at that time.

In 1788, Nguyen Hue King appointed him the position of “Vice Minister”, then he was promoted to the highest position in the Six Ministries. At the end of that year, 29,000 Thanh army attacked Dai Viet, using the pretext of destroying the Tay Son dynasty and rebuilding the Le dynasty. Ngo Thoi Nhiem had a plan to withdraw the Dai Viet army to keep the line at Tam Diep – Bien Son passes (Ninh Binh) which contributed to the victory of the Tay Son dynasty.

The history of the street name: During the French colonial period, this street was originally numbered 5. On March 30, 1906, it was named Jaureguiberry. On March 22, 1955, the name was changed to Ngo Thoi Nhiem until now.
